Broken or is it?

A few summers ago, I ended up in Bruges, Belgium. Arriving late at night, a walk through the town centre was a must. Day or night, medieval touch of that place gets definitely under your skin.

But what caught my attention (other than history) and what I wanted to share with you is the juxtaposition of the historical and the modern I felt on my visit there.

Surprisingly enough, this was experienced in a form of a mirror structure that reflected whatever was around. This had a bit of disturbing feel to it, that is for sure but proved to be a great subject to try and capture (even without a tripod).

I must admit that when I came to the same place the next day in a daylight I was a bit disappointed. All I could see was a glass structure reflecting too much of everything; great architecture, lot of people and 'mayhem' you would expect at a place like this.

Don't take me wrong, walking around during the day opened up world you definitely would not want to miss. Walking around at night however added certain charm; that of game of light & darkness, shadows & contrasting highlights and clarity created by broken lines.

Have a great time and see you next time. K-)

Blue Sun

For a while now, I have been thinking about a name for this jewellery set. It is an addition to my collection and it deserves a title. So let's have a look at my thinking process.

To start with, it has a blue element to it. Therefore, 'blue' is given. But blue what? Blue necklace, bracelet and earrings set? That sounds boring. Blue and black beads on a silver chain is far too long. And then it finally downed on me.

Remembering what I always say (and also forget), I looked at this photograph from different angle through different eyes. I stood back and examined the relationship with its surroundings.

Yes, it is a jewellery set, that is for sure. But it also has eyes and a very big mouth. It is sitting on something round that has a wire support suggested underneath. As a unit it IS a sun. A sun with a few of its own rays hanging along the bottom section.

Phew, that was exhausting. But at least here is my title: 'Blue Sun'.

Folded & Stamped

What you are looking at here is one of my own crochet jewellery pieces made out of wire, a collar.

At first, it was meant to compliment another piece but later I realised that I would be mixing two unrelated styles so it was better to abandon this idea and focus on each piece separately. Introducing new colour I went in raws, right and left without thinking,  and noticed that a curve was being created by default...

At this point, I need to point out that this is an example of starting on something and ending with something different, something so often reappearing in my practice. The question is, is there anyhing wrong with this? Isn't this one way of coming up with a design?

... coming back to the post the curved shape determined what I was making; indeed I was looking at a collar.

Since this started as a complimentary piece for something else it soon became clear that it was far too long for this piece. This is why I folded it and stamped down with a decorative circle (which I also made) and a collar was completed.

I am aware that for some it looks rather raw, kind of unfinished. On the other hand, raw is nothing new with my pieces therefore it ended up as a star of this post.

...and off I go to practice more...
