Admission: Wow, how much I have missed creating something, anything, with a crochet hook… Slowed by my own doing and also by other activities taking over, I am just happy that at least this project is in some sort of a motion…

Every season has something...

I know, I promised to update you on the progress on my 'Sized down' project. However. when one comes across a bit of frost in this year's winter, it is my obligation to share it with you. Do not forget, I write most of my posts from London, from south-east of England, where winter is hardly ever proper winter; there are no minus temperatures and there is no snow. And so when one morning, when walking through the park, such scene opened up to me I was pleasantly surprised.

The crunchy sound coming from under my feet filled me with joy and created such a smile on my face. Indeed this made my day.

Diving down for a moment of exploration, new world of added texture on the leaves revealed itself to me. As if covering and preserving the leaves keeping their colour and shape.

Stepping away from the leaves, I looked around in amazement. This might look messy to you but to me, it is colourful filled with emotions and charm.

I do like winter when it shows its beauty. White with snow, frozen lakes and windows covered with frost patterns. Every season has something.

Sized down

It is about time I turned my attention to something I started talking about quite a while ago. Do you remember my 'Three-Ten' post where I analysed a section of a door, chain links running through two little holes and screws (or shall I say bolts)?

Bringing in a bit of math, literally just a bit, I added the amount of chain links and put them against the amount of bolts, I was looking at the colour, the light & shadow and mentioned pitch drops.

One section of a door I went past one sunny day gave birth to a lot of possibilities, all of which were only written down in my post. That is untill now…

Using a leftover of a yarn I had here from another project, I worked out a pattern based on the single comparison of ten bolts and five chain links.

What I ended up with is a rather three dimensional sample that is some 25 cm long and with which I suddenly did not know what to do…


…And so it was time to re-read the original post when I talked about possible outcomes. If you remember it was either a large decorative piece or something smaller like jewellery. Coincidently, I came across rather thin yarn that was just what I thought might work. With the help of the smallest hook I ever laid my eyes on, I could translate the large piece into something much smaller…

These pieces are indeed based on the sample pattern but in this picture are just taken a step further; joined and/or extended.

Great start and a good fun. Oh, how I missed this. That is when there is too much disruption - such as taking pictures (which I also enjoy).
What is even more exciting is when it all follows a path. The path from inspiration, taken from a photograph, to a product.

Sized down

A few weeks ago, I left you with a possibility of a final product. The last picture in the 'Sized down' post was showing three variations based on the same pattern. Above is one of them, completed...

Also, if you remember, the image below served as a base of a pattern. Now it was time to focus on colours.

When looking at the picture my eyes started to pick the orange-red streaks in the pattern of the wood. And this is when I started to wonder what would happen if I reverse the colours. If I use green as a complimentary colour to the main red in my design, a pair of ear-rings…

Using the elements of this picture, the bolts and the chain, I tried to resemble what I could see in the image; very freely to some sort of an extent, of course. At this stage, I can leave it to you to decide how successful I have been.

Sized down - Incorporating Beads

Do you remember the Updates on my 'Sized down' project? Just to remind you, apart from the 'Links' earrings that I had already shared with you, there were other two unfinished pieces, a set to be. Well, the set has been finished for a while now and that brings it nicely to my discussion about whether to use wire or yarn...

To start with, I will show you another pair of earrings ('Drops') that were finished in more less the same fashion as the 'Links' (right).

The only difference is the choice of black colour for the additional part and in joining the red sections in a horizontal rather then vertical way. Hence the 'Drops' title.

But what I actually wanted to show you in this post is the necklace. I have to confess that for a long time I had two parts completed but could not think of a way of joining them together. The two for-a-while-completed parts are the ones joining the red sections with red and the black chain.

It was not till I learnt a new technique using beads, that Teri Howes so kindly shared with us on the one day course, that I could take the design further.

And so, finally, I ended with three chains, two purely yarn and one incorporating beads, that allowed me to finally finish the necklace. Adding the beads to purely yarn design brings extra charm that works so well here. What is more, with addition of the 'Drops' earrings I have a set.

In my early discussion of whether to use yarn or wire I have to stress out that everybody is different and different projects require different materials. I would say that for my 'Sized down' project yarn and a few beads worked just right, don't you think?

In the name of Winter 2013/2014

Yes, indeed, I have had quite a break from my blog. Apart from going away for Christmas/New Year's holiday (which was great since I went home), I was also searching for winter; for snow, frozen lake, extra cold temperatures… And none of this happened.

To my amazement, mushrooms began growing on this stump. I am aware that mushrooms grow all year round but somehow I find it strange to see them in such beautiful vivid colours.

This feels like autumn with spring feel; colourful and fresh. Similarly, the intro picture above makes you wonder weather we look at autumn or spring; autumn with its drying leaves and spring with the new folded growth on top that catches freshly red tone.

What happened to the weather, I ask. Having been back to England for the past week, we had cold temperatures one day followed by a warm spring-like day today. All this in the name of Winter 2013/2014. K-)
